Kenneth Evans raced MG, ERA and Alfa Romeo. Prepared at the family run Bellevue Garages in Wandsworth. He and his sister Doreen were regular competitors at Brooklands.
Born in Wimbledon, Surrey. Kenneth Evans was a popular racing driver. He started racing in MG's prepared at his father's Belle Vue Garage in Clapham by ace tuner Wilkie Wilkinson, who was later to find fame with Ecurie Ecosse. He raced a Cambridge Blue liveried 1935 MG R-Type Racing Single Seater (0255) which he shared with his sister Doreen.
Kenneth drove 0255 in the Empire Trophy on 6th July 1935. One of five R-Types running in the event, it succumbed to mechanical failure after seventy-three laps but not before it had diced with the likes of Pat Fairfield's victorious ERA or Donald Letts' third-placed MG K3 Magnette. Seven days later he raced it at Donington Park in the Nuffield Trophy. Lining-up against such famous names as Eddie Hall, Dick Seaman, Lindsay Eccles and Reg Parnell, Kenneth Evans managed a highly impressive sixth overall behind Freddie Dixon's 1500cc Riley after 2 hours, 36 minutes and 4 seconds of frantic effort.
He then took the car over to Europe for the Coppa Acerbo Junior race at Pescara, Italy on August 15th 1935. Retiring on lap one, they faired considerably better ten days later at the Prix de Bern in Bremgarten, Switzerland where they crossed the line eleventh overall having gone wheel to wheel with several ERAs and Maserati 4CSs.
The MG was sold when Doreen got engaged and was due to emigrate to California. It was purchased by the well-known South African racer, Roy Hesketh.
He also raced a private ERA & Alfa Romeo. His Alfa was first seen at Brooklands in 1937 where Ken brought it home second in a 10 lap Mountain Championship Scratch race.
He was a regular competitor at Brooklands along with his sister and his older brother Denis.
The Bellevue Garage was run by the Evans family and specialised in racing MGs.
Kenneth died in Chelsea, London 1985.
