Carroll Shelby drove a Maserati to victory in the featured Sports Car race on the Riverside International Raceway.


Riverside, California, USA. Carroll Shelby drove the John Edgar Maserati to victory in the featured 25 lap Sports Car race on the 3.7 mile Riverside International Raceway. Masten Gregory jumped into the lead on the green, followed by Walt Hansgen, Shelby and Dan Gurney. Hansgen moved his D Jaguar past Gregory for the lead at the end of the long backstraight on lap 2 with Shelby moving by for 2nd a lap later. Shelby passed Hansgen for the lead on lap 4, only to go off course a lap later, falling to 6th. Hansgen was back in the lead and Shelby was 22 seconds back, setting the stage for a great drive. Gurney got by Hansgen to take the lead on the 15th lap, the same lap Shelby moved past Gregory to regain 3rd. 2 laps later and Shelby was back out front, going on to take the checkered flag 5 seconds ahead of Gurney, making his first "big bore" Sports Car start in Frank Arciero's Ferrari. Gregory finished 3rd, 2 seconds behind Gurney, in Temple Buell's Maserati and Hansgen was 4th. Shelby averaged 87.8 mph on the chilly, windy day.
