Peter Ashdown

A leading light in the British Formula Junior scene, Peter had a real talent in small capacity sports cars. His made one GP appearance in 1959 at the British Grand Prix.

Peter Ashdown was born in Essex, England. He was one of the leading lights in the British Formula Junior scene and a number of good results in Lotus sports cars between 1955 and 1957 brought him a works drive. However an accident at Rouen in 1958, resulted in a broken collarbone which slowed his career.

He came back in 1959 and put in some good performances, the best being a win the Auvernge Trophy in a Lotus XI at Clermont Ferrand, beating Behra’s RS Porsche. He raced for Alan Brown in a Formula 2 Cooper-Climax at the 1959 British Grand Prix at Aintree.

Though he never again had a chance to race in a Grand Prix, he raced on in Formula Junior Lola and sports cars, winning his class in the 1960 and 1962 Nurburgring 1000km. He retired in 1962.

He lives in Danbury, Essex, where his family used to run a Vauxhall dealership.
