Krages, a native of Germany who drove under the name John Winter to hide his career from his family.
He was a longtime member of Joest Racing and co-driver in the Newman Porsche 956-117 second straight victory at Le Mans in 1985.
He also partnered Hurley Haywood for victory in the 1991 Daytona 24.
Krages who started racing in the late seventies was known for his endurance racing skill more than speed and drove for the Kremer team also early in his career. He went on to have a pretty successful career in the DTM with Joest's Opel team but was involved in a bad accident in 1994.
He made his home in Atlanta after retiring from racing in 1995.
Winter made a small fortune in the wood business but hard times hit and he lost most of it.
Krages, 51, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
