Warren Hughes
Warren Hughes has been described as ‘the best driver outside of F1’. There are probably also a few drivers inside of F1 relieved that he isn’t there – among them former team-mates such as Jacques Villeneuve or Rubens Barrichello, both of whom he out-paced as brief team-mates in Formula 3. Before that, Warren became the most statistically dominant British Formula Ford champion of all time, taking 19 wins from 24 starts in the category in 1990, a start-to-win ratio that even eclipsed that of Ayrton Senna, set nine years earlier. But, now in his 30s, Warren is no longer chasing the Grand Prix dream. Instead he sees his future as a top international racer in categories such as Sportscars and Touring Cars. With two sensational performances in the Le Mans 24 Hour race and two highly successful British Touring Car seasons behind him, it is a path he has well and truly established. However, in 2004 the unfortunate withdrawal of factory support from the MG Sport & Racing team resulted in Warren being on the sidelines at the start of the season. A sad situation for a driver widely regarded as one of the very best of his generation. Undaunted, Warren channelled his efforts in to selected Sportscar outings during 2004 and to great effect, winning races and impressing hugely in various one-off appearences. His recent experience of new projects in sportscars and touring cars, combined with his speed and set-up skills, held him in good stead and he proved a huge asset to the teams he drove for. The reward has been a full contract in 2005, driving for the newly formed British Sportscar outfit, Team LNT. The programme will consist of the Sebring 12 Hours, Le Mans 24 Hours, European Le Mans Series and the British GT Championship.
