Luigi de Filippis is the brother of Maria Teresa de Filippis. He was born at Vicaria, Italy and started racing sports cars in hillclimbs and reliabilty tests in 1940s.

In 1949 he bought a Maserati 4CLT/48 (1603) which he lent to Clemente Biondetti to drive in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza and for the Temporada series in Argentina over the winter of 1949/1950.

He raced the Ferrari 166SC in the 11th Grand Prix of Rome on the Caracella Baths circuit in 1950, but retired after a large pile up on the first lap. That year he also raced his Maserati 4CLT/48 in the XIX Circuito di Pescara. He qualified in 9th place and though he finished 6th, he was not classifed as he was two laps behing the winner, Fangio. His entry was accepted for the Italian Grand Prix but for some mysterious reason, he did not turn up.

In 1951 he raced the  Ferrari 166SC in the Gran Premio di Napoli, retiring on the 14th lap.
