Luca started competing in 1977 on two wheels, riding Motocross. He didnt switch to four wheels until 1991 when he took tot he hills. Between then and 1997 he competed in national hillclimb events.
In 1997 he switched to circuit racing Group N saloon cars in European Endurance Touring Cars
Then in 1999 he made his debut in the FIA GT Championship with Haberthur Racing's Porsche 911 GT2. For the next four years he drove various Chrysler Viper GTS-R in the FIA GT Championship and the American LeMans Series.
A swith to BMS Scuderia Italia and a Ferrari 550-GTS Maranello in 2003 brought about a mojor change of fortune. Partnered by Fabrizio Gollin, Cappellari proved a consistent driver and won the final race at Monza to finish runners-up in the Championship behind team-mates Thomas Biagi and Matteo Bobbi.
BMS Scuderia Italia were the class of the field again in 2004 with Gollin and Cappellari once again proving a very competetive line up. The Spa 24 Hour race was one of three victories they took that year to see them take the title in another 1-2 for the team.
He stopped racing at an International level at the end of the year but returned in 2007 to race in national GTs and saloons, winning the 2008 Campionato Italiano Turismo Endurance Championship. He also raced in the 24h Nürburgring race on the Nordschleife finishing 3rd in 2011.
He retired from racing the following year.
