The owner of a garage near Brooklands, Charles Brackenbury raced a variety of machines between 1929 and 1953. He finished third at Le Mans twice, in 1935 and 1939.
Born in South Elkington, Lincolnshire 1907. Charles Brackenbury had a garage near the Brooklands racetrack, where started racing career in 1929 with an old French BNC. From 1930 to 1933 he drove a red Bugatti T37, and between 1933 and 1934, a MG Midget.
From 1935 on he raced with the ex-Hellé-Nice Bugatti T35C. Sometimes he raced others cars such as Dixon's Riley or Martin's Alfa Romeo in 1936-37, and at Brooklands he could sometimes be seen in a a 11-year-old Sunbeam!
In 1938 he started with different Bugattis (T37A, T35C and T51) and in 1939 with an ERA and a works-Lagonda. After the war he continued entering races and hillclimbs until 1953, when he retired.
He died ten years later. His greatest successes were third places at the Le Mans 24h in 1935 and 1939. Died in Woking, Surrey 1959.
