Pee Wee Jones

Pee Wee Jones was one of the original members of NASCAR when it was formed in 1949 by Bill France and ran in the old convertible series for a short time.

Born Phillip Sylvester Jones, he traveled the East Coast for 24 years, while accumulating some 200 plus wins. His career was highlighted with 6 Championships at the Legendary Bowman Gray Stadium. 5 of these Championships were won in 5 consecutive years. A record that still stands after 40 years. He raced on most of the tracks on the East Coast, from the Sands at Daytona Beach to the Old Longhorn Penn. Speedway, winning several other Track Championships in the Modified Division of NASCAR. He competed in seven Nextel Cup races making his debut in 1955 at Spartanburg. Unfortunately he crashed out early finishing a disappointing 21st. his next race was at Weaverville where he came a career-best 13th despite mechanical problems. He raced in three rounds in 1956 without success and once in 1957 at Langhorne finishing 15th. His final Nextel Cup race came in 1959 at Winston-Salem. Starting 8th his engine let go near the finish. He passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve at his home in Clemmons NC at the age of 80.
