Walter Handley

A well-known motor cyclist who won the Senior Manx TT in 1930, he was also involved with car racing, mostly driving Rileys. He was killed, serving with the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1941.

Walter Handley was born in Aston, Birmingham 1902. He was a well-known motor cyclist who won the Senior Manx TT in 1930. Handley’s Corner on the Manx TT circuit was named after him.

Walter Handley’s TT career spanned the formative years of the Mountain Circuit, 1922 – 1934, during which time he took the chequered flag four times, incudinga a ‘double’ in 1925 – the Lightweight and Ultra Lightweight Races on Rex-Acme machines. Two years later he again took the Lightweight honours on the Rex-Acme marque. His final TT victory came in the Senior Race of 1930, this time mounted on a Rudge. Apart from his four wins, he was second three times, and third twice. He mad no fewer than nine fastest laps during his TT career.

He was also involved with car racing, driving Rileys. Entered the 1934 & 1935 Mannin Beg. He had a bad crash at the 1936 Empire Trophy after taking over Dixon’s third placed Riley. He was killed, serving with the Air Transport Auxiliary, Kirkbampton, Cumberland 1941.
