Founder of Schnitzer Motorsport with his brother in 1967, Herbert and Joseph both used to race but quit in 1968 to concentrate on the business.

Herbert Schnitzer and his brother Joseph started racing in 1962. Their stepfather, Karl Lamm, had a garage and automobile dealership.

In 1966 Josef Schnitzer won the German Championship in a BMW 2000ti. The following year Herbert and Josef founded Schnitzer Motorsport with the aim of running BMWs in motorsport.  In 1968, they both retired from driving to concentrate on the business and the racing team.

Josef was killed in a road accident in 1978 but Herbert remained as team principal assisted by his half-brother, Charly Lamm.

As well as a BMW dealership and Motorsport team, they also own a specialist BMW tuning concern in Aachen.

Mainly involved with Touring car racing in the European Touring Car Championship, the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), Schnitzer Motorsport have won over 20 titles, including three European Touring Car Championships.

Schnitzer Motorsport was also active in Sports car racing and endurance racing and won Le Mans in 1999 with the BMW V12 LMR, the Spa 24 Hour race five times wins and the Nurburgring 24 Hour race twice with the M3 GTR.
