Before he started racing, he flew a one-man aerobatics show in his Christen Eagle and Fouga Magister Jet. He soloed in 1962 at the young age of fourteen. He took up hot air ballooning in 1979 and became a helicopter pilot in 1980.

Dennis began racing in 1991 competing in the Flying Tiger event at Plattsburgh, NY. Next year, his division turned into Late Models. In 1994 he joined the ACT Tour and won Rookie of the Year. In 1996 he started racing Busch North, going full-time in 1997. Dennis got his first Busch North Series, NASCAR win at Stafford in 1999 and finished 8th in the point standings.
