American racing driver who started out competing in European F3 before returning to the States to race in Formula 5000, Can Am and Indy Cars.

Born John Ranson Lewis III in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He raced in Formula Three in Europe, where he fell in love with local wines and lifestyles. Randy returned to the States to compete in Formula 5000, Can Am, and finally Indy Cars from 1983 to 1991.

A five-time starter in the Indianapolis 500, his best starting position was 11th in 1988 and 1989. His best finish was 13th. His last race at Indy was the 1991 Indianapolis 500. In his 81 CART starts his best finish was an 8th in 1987.

He retired in the early 1990's to make wine. His vinyard, Lewis Cellars, is a small family winery established in 1992 by Randy and his wife Debbie. They have recently been joined by their son Dennis. Total production is approximately 8,500 cases annually of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah.
