Actually born Max Jean, his name was incorrectly listed as Jean Max on an entry form once and history has known by this name subsequently. He was born in Marseille and first started competing in local rallies in 1964.
He spent much of his early career driving for Serge Aziosmanoff's GRAC in their Formula Ford and F3 cars. He also raced sports cars driving a NART ASA RB613 at the Le Mans 24hr test weekend in 1966 and in the race proper in 1968, driving an XS Simca entered by Andre Moynet and driving with Rene Ligonnet. They went out early on with oil pump failure.
He won the French Formula Ford Championship in 1968 taking 11 wins from the 17 rounds before switching to a F3 Tecno in 1970.
With Motul backing for 1971, he raced briefly in Formula 2 for Williams, handling the team's March 701 in that year's French GP. After a couple of unsuccessful outings in a Brabham BT38 for Ron Dennis' Rondel Team in Formula 2 the following year, Max returned to French F3 in 1973 with an ORECA Martini MK12, again backed by the French oil giants, though 1973 was the last year of his sponsorship due to the global oil crisis.
Without sponsorship he retired and established a transport company with his son.
