Huub Rothengatter participated in 30 Formula One Grands Prix, always driving for small and under-funded teams. He made his F1 debut on June 17, 1984. He scored no championship points. Rothengatter later entered into F1 management, as the manager of Jos Verstappen.
Hubertus Rothengatter was born in Bussum, Holland. He started racing in karts at the relatively late age of 18, graduating to single seaters five years later in German F3 as team mate to Jan Lammers in Racing Team Holland.
He then moved up to F2 with a Chevron B48 Hart and spent three years in the class, his best year coming in 1980 winning in Zolder in 1980 with a Toleman TG280 Hart. He scored two 6ths, two 5ths, two 4ths and took a fine win at Zolder finishing the season 7th overall on 21 points.
In 1984 he made his first appearance in F1 driving for Spirit-Binder in the Spirit/Hart 101. IN his eight races he failed to qualify once, retired twice and was not classified twice. He did finish 9th in Germany and eighth in Italy, three laps down on Niki Lauda in the Mclaren.
For 1985 he moved to Oscella, once again without any real results. A seventh in Australia at the end of the year was his best result in F1 however he was four laps down on the lead cars and three down on Berger, who was 6th in his Arrows. Oh and only 8 cars finished.
A move to Zakspeed in 1986 at a rumored cost of $100,000 per race was frustrated by 9 retirements and one DNQ. He only finished twice, 12th and last in Canada and an eighth in Austria, four laps down on Alain Prost.
He constantly tried to get Dutch sponsors and once even placed a double-page advertisement in De Telegraaf, a Dutch newspaper.
Rothengatter later entered into F1 management, as a manager for Dutch driver Jos Verstappen.
