Both Hugh's parent competed at Olympic level in equestrian events, however his idea of horsepower was slightly different. For more than two decades, Plumb has competed in endurance series including the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, American Le Mans Series, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, and World Challenge America.

Raised in an equestrian family, Hugh Plumb learned about horsepower at an early age. Both parents Olympians - mother in the 1968 and his father a record setting seven, Hugh was quickly riding toward a career involving horses, but soon realize, riding was not the sport for him.

Although he raced motorcycles and then cars against his parent's wishes, Hugh credits his parents for instilling the competitive spirit in him.

Dirt bikes led to road racing bikes and in his first three seasons of both Super Sport and Super Bike Championship, Hugh finished with 25 wins.

Two years at the University of Delaware and then two more at New England College resulted in a degree in history and a business minor, but Hugh's business was to get to the track. With two wins and nine podium finishes in the Skip Barber Racing Series, Hugh was the Rookie of the Year Runner-up in 1997. The following year, Hugh bought his first race car amd entered the SCCA World Challenge Championship, where he raced for the next four seasons.

In 2002 he joined the American Le Mans Series, finishing second at The 12 Hours of Sebring with Seikel Motorsports. He also drove a Ferrari 550 Marranello for XL Racng at thee Petit Le Mans rounds.

For 2003 he drove in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car / GT Series, finishing second in GT Series Championship in the Marcus Motorsport BMW M3. He took wins at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill and Birmingham.
 
Staying in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car / GT Series the following year he qualified 2nd for the Rolex 24 at Daytona, finally crossing the line in 5th. He aslo raced in the Grand-Am Cup and American Le Mans Series driving for PK Sport / Porsche GT3 RS. In his five races for them he finished in the top five three times.

In 2005 he again qualified well at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, once agin finishing 5th. He also drove In the Grand-Am Cup Series.

In 2018 he teamed up with Owen Trinkler to win the GS championship title for Team TGM.

He has continued to race in IMSA, and as of 2021 he is currently driving a Chevrolet Camaro in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Grand Sport class and a Porsche 911 GT3 R in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship - GTD class
