Born in Los Angeles, Bob Dorricott started competing in drag racing in the 1950s. He was also a front-runner in SCCA Pro Sports 2000, taking five National titles between 1989 and 1995.

Later he switched to circuit racing and was a front-runner in SCCA Pro Sports 2000, taking five National titles between 1989 and 1995.

In 1990 he ran a limited Indy Lights programme between 1990 and 1993 with his son Bob Jr. doing the driving.

In 1994 they ran a full season and expanded the team in 1995 to run two cars. Dorricott Racing won its first race at Detroit's Belle Isle with Robbie Buhl, who finished second in that year's championship.

The team continued in Indy Lights with considerable success. winning the Indy Lights Series Championship in 1999 and 2001 and finished second in 2000. In 2002, with the demise of the Indy Lights Championship Series, the team entered the Toyota Atlantic Championship and dominated that series as well. 

A leader on and off the track, Bob Dorricott was also a successful business executive as President and Chief Executive Officer of Sunnyvale Valve and Fitting Co., Inc.. He was also a member of the American Racing Series, Inc. (ARS) Board of Directors, the former corporate operating body of the Dayton Indy Lights Championship.

He passed away on April 26, 2002 at the family home in Los Altos Hills, California, of cancer.
