Ernie Cope, the cousin of NASCAR driver Derrick Cope, is a former NASCAR driver with 11 starts. He now works for the Wood Brothers JTG Race Team as crew chief.

Ernie Cope, the cousin of NASCAR driver Derrick Cope, was born in Spanaway, Washington, and is himself a former NASCAR driver with 11 starts. He started competing in BMX racing and at one point won 26 races in a row.

He started racing stock cars and when he was 19, he joined the NASCAR Northwest Tour Series. After finishing second overall in 1994 he moved up to the Winston West Series with sponsorship from Straight Arrow Products.

In his first year, he finished second in overall points, won two races, and won Rookie of the Year honors.

In 1996 after unsuccessfully trying to put together a sponsorship deal to go truck racing, Ernie moved to North Carolina.  He raced four times that year and also joined Geoff Bodine Racing as Crew Chief for the Craftsman Truck team.

He hung up his helmet in 1999 to concentrate full time on crew chief duties. He now works for the Wood Brothers JTG Race Team, he previously worked as crew chief with Evernham Racing, Score Motorsports and Robert Yates Racing before joining the Wood Brothers at the beginning of 2005.
