1999 saw the arrival of BAR on the F1 scene. Having made predictions about winning their first race as per Wolf the reality was somewhat different. The biggest impact (no pun intended) they made all season occured on this day (28 August) in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

Jacques Villeneuve always took Eau Rouge flat and this day was going to be no different only he didn't make it all the way and had a fairly big one, destroying his car in the process but fortunately walking away from it. His team mate, the rookie Ricardo Zonta, also attempted which by now was quite obviously the impossible and took the same corner flat with similar results to his more experienced team mate only the destruction he wrought upon the poor BAR FB01 was even more comprehensive, though he too escaped injury.
