The Sebring 12 Hours Race featured a Trans-Am race for the first time. Won by Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby in a Ford X-1 entered by Shelby American Inc

Tragedy strikes as driver Bob McLean is killed. Later in the race, four spectators are killed when Don Wester's Porsche 906 hits them while attempting to avoid Mario Andretti's spinning Ferrari. Dan Gurney's car, leading with four minutes left, stops on course. As he tries to push the car across the finish line, the Miles/Ruby Ford passes him in the final minute.
