In 1986 Burgmann shared the car with Mal Rose in the James Hardie 1000 Bathurst. Tragically he lost his life after his Group A Holden Commodore VK SS struck Conrod Straight's bridge. Burgmann was dicing with Gary Willmington on lap 6 and became airborne on the second hump and didn't land straight. Apparently as cars came over the last hump side by side they sometimes used become unsettled by the cross wind near the old bridge. Burgmann got a wheel on the grass and slid headlong into the bank.
