Enthusiastic 500cc F3 driver who bought an Aston-Butterworth in 1952. Quit racing later that year and emigrated to the USA.

Robert Victor Campbell Montgomerie was born in Gloucestershire. Educated at Eton College he took up farming. Know as Monty he started racing in a 500 cc F3 JAP-engined Cooper but was not a front runner.

Married to an American, his cars often ran in the blue and white racing colors of the USA. Somewhere along the line he became Montgomerie-Charrington and is sometimes refered to as Robin.

In 1952 he acquired the second Aston-Butterworth F2 car built by Archie Butterworth. Powered by a two-liter flat-4 engine, both cars appeared at the International Trophy in May. Bill Aston and Montgomerie raced at Chimay in June with Montgomerie finishing third despite coasting to a halt when out of fuel on the last lap. A week later the cars were at Monza for the GP dell'Autodromo. Here Monty finished 12th. Monty then raced at Spa in the Belgian Grand Prix and again a few days later at Reims in the Grand Prix de la Marne.

Before the year was out however, 'Monty' quit racing and emigrated to the USA with his wife. Laterly he returned to the UK where he still made occaional appearances at historic festivals.
