Michael Ammermüller was born in Pocking, Germany, he started racing karts at the age of 10. Racing in Germany, Austria and Italy he won the European Junior title in 2000.

He moved up to single seaters and in 2003 he became a member of the Red Bull juior team after winning a BWM ADAC cholarship.

In 2004 he drove in German Formula Renault as well as competing in Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup finishing third in the series.

He took 9 wins, 21 podiums in the Italian and Eurocup Formula Renault championships. This saw him finish runner-up in the European series and move up to GP2 for 2006.

Driving for Arden International he took one win and 3 podium finishes. After Christian Klien was dropped by the Red Bull for the final three races of 2006, Robert Doornbos was promoted to the second race seat. Ammermüller was thus promoted to third driver for the last three races of the season. He tested the car for the first time on September 14, clocking up the miles necessary for an FIA Super Licence.

As well as testing for Red Bull in 2007, Ammermüller moved to ART Grand Prix in GP2.
