John won the Index of Thermal Efficiency at Le Mans in 1960 and the 1300cc class there in 1963. He also took class wins at the Nurburgring 1000km race in 1960 and 1963 and 2nd in class in 1962.

John started motor racing on Easter Monday 1956 at Mallory Park in a Triumph TR2, and raced a Lotus Mk.II (1957-1959) and a Lotus Elite (1959-1965).

John's major racing successes came during the early 1960s, and included the Index of Thermal Efficiency at Le Mans in 1960 and 1st in the 1300cc class at Le Mans in 1963. 1st 1300cc class at the Nurburgring 100km 1960, 1st 1300cc class Nurburgring 1000km 1963, 2nd 1300cc class Nurburgring 1000kms 1962, and 2nd at Spa in 1961.
