After the Hungarian Grand Prix in 1991 where Gachot finished 9th, he travelled to England where he got into a minor traffic accident with a London taxi. However what had started as a small incident resulted in a physical altercation, during which Gachot sprayed the taxi driver with CS gas, which was illegal. Not only was Bertrand arrested, but he was sentenced to 6 months to 2 years in Brixton prison. On appeal the court agreed that the sentence was too harsh and the he walked free after just 2 months.
