Events on this day

Interesting and notable events from the history of motor sport.

1917 Ralph Mulford wins the shortest Champ Car race on record, winning a five-mile event on a concrete oval in Providence.

2001 Alex Zanardi suffered horrific injuries in a CART crash at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz near Brandenburg, Germany which resulted in both his legs being amputated. It was the first sporting event to be held after September 11, 2001. Zanardi was leading the race in the closing laps when, after a late pit stop, he spun into the path of Alex Tagliani, who was travelling at over 330Kph, while rejoining the race.
