1965 Our man Alonso was not the first F1 driver to skip Monaco to complete in the Indy 500. Back in 1965 the late great Jim Clark drove a Lotus Ford to victory at the Brickyard, fininshing two minutes ahead of Parnelli Jones. It was Ford's first win in the 500.
1992 Nigel Mansell had started the year with 5 straight wins. At Monaco he was on pole and led virtually the whole race. Unfortunately he had to make an extra pit stop and emerged behind Senna. Despite Mansell's best efforts he couldn't get past and Senna held on to take his 5th win in the Principality.
