Major Peter Braid began racing in 1949 with a Cooper Mk III. He turned out to be quite quick and won his first race in July at Silverstone. Another win followed in August at Great Auclum. A week later the circus moved to Blandford Camp in Dorset where in an earlier race Gordon Woods crashed his Frazer Nash BMW and was thrown out receiving head injuries that would sadly prove fatal later in hospital.

    Our man Alonso was not the first F1 driver to skip Monaco to complete in the Indy 500. Back in 1965 the late great Jim Clark drove a Lotus Ford to victory at the Brickyard, fininshing two minutes ahead of Parnelli Jones. It was Ford's first win in the 500.
  • 1992
    Nigel Mansell had started the year with 5 straight wins. At Monaco he was on pole and led virtually the whole race. Unfortunately he had to make an extra pit stop and emerged behind Senna. Despite Mansell's best efforts he couldn't get past and Senna held on to take his 5th win in the Principality.
