Best remembered for successfully racing a 3 litre Bentley at Brooklands.
At University he built a chain driven special and later rebuilt and raced the GNat.
He started competing in 1935 with the Bentley winning a 2nd class award in his first event, a trial organised by the VSCC in the Chilterns in January of that year.
He was an early member of the VSCC and in 1936 he joined the committee. He continued to serve the club until his death. He was the Competition Secretary pre-WWII and organised the first post war event for the club, a trial at Marlow in Buckinghamshire in February 1946. He served as President between 1957 and 1959 and was also an RAC Steward and Srutineer.
With the GNat he brought it out for the first time at the Brooklands Society Spring meeting at Silverstone in May 1972 and also won the 'Shelesly Specials' Award on the hill in July.
He was also a regular competitor in the Pomeroy Trophy and the Welsh Trial with his 4.5 litre Bentley.
His son Michael was editor of the Motor and founding editor of Classic Car.
